Prof. Vearumun Tarhule was born on 15th April 1964 at Ahumbe-Aliade, Benue State. He attended R. C. M Primary School, Abenga from 1971-1977

and had his secondary education at Mt. St. Gabriel’s from 1977 - 1982.

 

Vearumun was at School of Basic Studies Makurdi next, before gaining admission to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in 1985 to read Law. He graduated with an LL.B (Hons) in 1988 and proceeded to Nigerian Law School, Lagos from 1988-89 leading to his being called to Bar.

Subsequently, it has been one educational attainment to another leading to his present status. These include:

-Benue State University, Makurdi. LL.M (2002)

-University of Jos. PhD (2011)

 

The start of Prof’s working career mirrored his humble beginnings. From 1984-85, he started out as a class teacher at Shangev-Tiev Cmmunity Secondary School Awajir, in Konshisha LGA of Benue State. This was even before he would gain admission into the University.

After University education, he did his one year compulsory NYSC with TOKUMBO SANGOSANYA & Co in Lagos, Nigeria in 1990 and followed up with a 1-year Law practice at same firm immediately after NYSC.

He also practiced with JIME, IGBABON & Co in Makurdi for a year before taking up an appointment as Magistrate II/Senior Area Court Judge, at the High Court of Justice, Makurdi, Benue State.

Prof would resign soon after to pursue a career in the academics joining the fledgling Benue State University back in 1998 where he is still serving.

From first engagement as an Assistant Lecturer on March 3rd 1998, Prof. Vearumun Tarhule went through the various stages to become a full professor in October of 2018.

As a lecturer, he has taught various courses at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels including Constitutional Law, Evidence Law, Commercial Law, Property Transactions and Securities etc.

He has held many positions within the University including as:

  • Member, Senate Committee on Examination Misconducts and Irregularities
  • Coordinator, Benue State University, Abuja Study Centre, Abuja
  • Member, Committee on Harmonization of Diploma Examinations
  • Deputy Dean, Faculty of Law, BSU Makurdi
  • Chairman, Examination Irregularities Committee (ERIC) Benue State University, Makurdi
  • Dean, Faculty of Law Benue State University

He is currently the Dean, Postgraduate School of the university.

He has authored many publications including journals, a book and has edited several other books.

He has presented papers at many seminars and international conferences in Nigeria and overseas.

Prof has supervised many LL.M Thesis, with over 5 PhD Supervisions and assisted in several other supervisions.

He is a member of some key Professional Organizations such as:
- Member, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA)
- Member, International Bar Association (IBA)
- Member, Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT)

- Member, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)

- Member, Committee of Provosts and Deans of Postgraduate Colleges and Schools of Nigerian Universities

- Member, World Society of Victimology (WSV)

 

Prof. has also been involved in several other engagements. A few include:

  • 2nd Vice Chairman, NBA Makurdi Chapter (2004 – 2006)
  • Member, Benue State Local Government Elections Tribunal, Otukpo Zone (2008)
  • Member, Benue State Law Review Committee (2009 – 2014)
  • Board Member, Benue State Planning Commission (2012– 2015)
  • Chairman, NBA Continuing Legal Education Committee for Makurdi Chapter of the NBA (2012- 2016)
  • Board Member, Benue Investment and Property Company 2017 – 2019

Despite his seemingly overwhelming schedule, Prof. is never tired of engaging fully in MSGOBA activities as all can attest. He was the President of MSGOBA from 2011 -2014, a period of turbulence for the Association which he helped stabilize.

 

Prof. Vearumun Vitalis Tarhule is married to Mrs. Mrumun Tarhule, a marriage blessed with three children.
