SPOTLIGHT ACHIRGA

Abraham Terngu Achirga

  • PUBLICITY SECRETARY, MSGOBA WORLDWIDE
  • Secretary, WEBSITE COMMITTEE
  • SET 1994
  • STAFF, REUTERS. CEO, SUREVISION MEDIA
  • CONTENT PRODUCER, CINEMATOGRAPHER/PHOTOGRAPHER (Camera operator), EDITOR, WRITER
  • LIVES IN ABUJA, NIGERIA

Born 22nd September 1977 in Shendam, Plateau State, Abraham Achirga is the 2nd of 3 children (now 2) from the family of Shaaji and Laadi Achirga Abuul, from Ushongu LGA of Benue State Nigeria.

He attended St. John’s Primary School Gboko and graduated in 1988 then MSG from 1989 to 94.

while in school he was a labor prefect and assisted in lawn tennis duties.

Abraham though quiet, was actually quick to speak his mind and even as a ‘little angel’, he never hesitated in asking for changes such as:

  • In JSS 1 he requested for his Surname to be changed from Abuul to Achirga reason being that Abuul, his great grandfather had died in 1922 and was popular enough and it was time others like his grandfather Achirga be recognized as well.
  • Due to the toughness of Muggaga house, he requested and successfully changed his house from Muggaga to Kalemba. Where life was more bearable for him.
  • He successfully changed classes from SS3F to SS3E citing ‘a more conducive learning environment’

……hahaha

University education wasn’t so straightforward with an unrewarding year at the University of Agriculture Makurdi in 1996 from where he proceeded to Bayero University Kano for a B.Sc. in Economics.

A brief stint in the private sector followed with a role of Pension Rep with a Pension Fund Administrator, PAL under UBA.

His foray into the media world started quite unceremoniously. It took a visit to a cousin’s office in Wuse Zone 2, where he saw raw video being edited and manipulated and from that moment on, there was only one thing he wanted to do; Content Production. So it started with editing, lessons in camera operations, then behind-the-camera roles on movie sets. About 2009, Reuters came looking for someone that could shoot, edit and write – Abraham Achirga ticked all three boxes. The full turn around towards journalism ensued.

Intensive trainings and related courses followed in Nigeria and abroad to bring him to speed and soon enough he was the much sought after producer.

He has extensive experience in Cinematogrphy, Photography, News Editing/Reporting, Movie Production, Script Writing, Documentary and Feature Stories Production.

Abraham rose through the ranks from freelancer – stringer – contractor to become a staff of Reuters, and now heading the Abuja Tv desk. Back then, while stringing for Reuters, he also freelanced at various times for;

  • BBC (highpointt being coverage of Chinua Achebe’s burial in Ogidi, Anambra State.)
  • China Central Television (CCTV)
  • Mark Eddo Media
  • Al Jazeera
  • IHA (Turkey)
  • AIC (Nairobi)
  • RT (Russia Today)

Over a 15-year period in the media industry as a Video journalist with Thomson Reuters, he has successfully produced over 700 news stories aired on international broadcast channels, print and online platforms worldwide including CNN, CGTN, BBC, Aljazeera, FOX News etc.

He has also worked on several confidential/investigative reports including the Al Jazeera watchdog investigative report on global match fixing that led to bans handed out to some Nigerian officials.

The boy from Gboko also consults for UNICEF Nigeria and has produced over a 100 human angle stories covering issues like: Malnutrition, Health, Immunization, MNTE, WASH, Girl Child Education, Climate Change, Child Protection and several Advocacy Campaigns. I have also at various times produced for UNOCHA, UNFPA and MSF.

In 2014, Abraham was part of a Nigerian delegation to Sudan, led by then Minister of Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga and Mohammed Abacha, to study, document and produce a comprehensive sugar master plan for the country’s self-sufficiency in Sugar. The documentary he produced, was presented, and viewed at a federal executive council meeting.

In 2013 he set up Surevision Media to help tell stories. The company offers consultancy as well as coverage and documentation of events with state of the art equipment and expertise.

Abraham Achirga has been PRO of set 1994 for over 10 years now and has also doubled as PRO of SET 94 Abuja chapter for over 6 years. He played a key role in the huge presence of set 94 at Garkawa at the visit to late Fr. Fraser and has also helped mobilize the set accomplish some projects for the alma mata.

Abraham is happily married to Angbiandoo Mercy Achirga and the marriage is blessed with a girl and 2 boys.
